Higurana Sugar Factory to recommence operations

Higurana Sugar Factory to re-commence operations

The production process of the Higurana Sugar Factory – which had ceased operations for 20 years – is set to recommence in October. As a result of the reopening, close to 600 employees who lost their jobs with the closure of the factory are to be re-employed, while producing 72,000 metric tons to supply the local market.
A spokesperson for the project revealed that a Singaporean investor is expected to invest Rs. 13.5 billion towards the project, with the Sri Lankan Government holding 51 percent and the investor owning 49 percent of the shares respectively.
In addition, measures are to be taken to develop 18 acres of land and 18 tanks in close proximity to the Hingurana Sugar Factory project.
